Private Pilot Training Program
Maui Flight Academy instructors are specialized in Cirrus Aircraft training to instill the confidence and skills necessary for you to pilot an advanced aircraft. Your training will take you to new destinations, and our program will guide you through the process to assure your course completion.

With a Private Pilot Certificate you are cleared to fly a US-registered aircraft anywhere in the world, day or night, weather conditions permitting. Our Scenario-Based Training helps accomplish this by designing your training around the actual flight patterns Airline employers use. You will travel to different locations and experience different airspaces to become a well-rounded pilot capable of becoming a successful Airline Pilot.

The Private Pilot Training consists of the following FAA requirements:

  • 40 hours of flight time minimum
  • Passing the FAA written exam
  • 5 hours of Cross-Country Flight
  • 10 hours as Solo/ Pilot In Command
  • Passing the FAA checkride
  • Our average student takes 70-80 hours of training
When you complete your Private Pilot Training at Maui Flight Academy, you will be confident in your abilities and ready to advance to your next rating program. A Private Pilot Certificate allows you to fly in Visual Flight Rule (VFR) conditions, which is the absence of clouds and other meteorological disturbances. In order to fly an aircraft in adverse weather conditions you must have your Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) rating to be Pilot in Command during a non-VFR flight.

We don't accept GI Bill financing at this time.

Instrument Flight Rules Rating (IFR) Program is designed to quickly and efficiently transform a Private Pilot into one who can take on clouds and adverse weather conditions. You will train in busy and complex airspaces that will build your confidence as a Pilot in Command. This flight rating will enable you to fly the aircraft with little to no visibility, an airline industry standard. Gain a distinct advantage with the modern features in the Cirrus aircraft including; Multiple Moving Map Displays, Terrain and Traffic Warning Systems and real time weather.

IFR requirements are:

  • 50 hours as PIC Cross-Country
    1. Includes 40 hours of instrument flight training
  • 30 hours pre- and post-flight ground school
  • Pass Instrument Written Exam
After earning your IFR Certificate, you will fly confidently in clear or cloudy skies.

There is a global shortage of Professional Pilots. According to Boeing, in the United States alone, major airlines are cancelling flights and grounding planes due to a shortage of pilots. This is happening NOW. It is estimated that in the next 20 years the US will need over 95,000 new pilots; globally this could reach 498,000. Read the Boeing Report.  Confluences of several important factors are creating this shortage:

Airline Growth
The expansion of current Airline fleets means a need for new Pilots. With major Airlines investing in new aircraft and offering more flights from wider additional locations, Pilots will be needed continually.

Mandatory Retirements
New FAA regulations have placed a mandatory retirement age of 65 for all Airline Pilots. Major Airlines are facing a staggering 45,000 mandatory Pilot retirements over the next 20 years due to this rule. With over half of the current Pilot population over the age of 50, new Pilots will be needed to fill this void.

New FAA Regulations
The 1500 rule was issued by the FAA to raise the flight hour requirement from 250 hours to 1500 hours for first officers for any U.S. air carrier. This has stained the industry’s pilot supply as new pilots are mandated to build hours outside of the airlines until they reach 1500 hours.

The Maui Lifestyle
When you consider all the locations in the world to get your training completed, Maui is about as good as it gets!
