Pre-Checkride Training for students visiting Maui
With over 12,000 hours and over 11,000 landings instructed in the Cirrus SR22, Laurence Balter, CSIP, ATP, CFII is recognized globally in the Cirrus community. A frequent speaker at FAA WINGS safety seminars he has raised awareness of Angle of Attack to the General Aviation community. Critical to flight safety Angle of Attack is now a requirement to be understood and discussed in flight reviews by all US licensed pilots.
Due to exceptionally high demand globally for pilot training and our growing wait list for a training slot, all prospective students must meet specific criteria for consideration.
This program is designed to prepare you for the Private Pilot checkride.
You will not perform the 10 hours of solo requirements for the license. This is due to a change in the extremely high insurance costs in Hawaii.
Your pre-PPL training includes how to master flying the Cirrus SR22.
Short field takeoffs and landings.
Turns around a point.
Approach to landing stalls.
Power off glide.
Instrument training and unusual attitudes.
VOR and GPS navigation.
Soft field takeoff and landings.
Power off 180°.
Class B airspace operations.
Cross Country navigation.
Angle of Attack Training.
And of course mastering the famous crosswind landings in Maui.
The program is intense and focused. Starting each morning at 8:30 you will fly 2-3 sorties a day with briefings/debriefings oral and exam preparation. Your day is complete by 3pm.
Plan on 12-14 days of training and accumulate 30-35 flight hours.
A pre-requisite is passing the ground school program prior to arrival as well as the FAA written exam. This is available on our website at www.mauiflightacademy.com/groundschool.html

One of the fundamental differences of your training versus other mainland civilian schools is the emphasis placed on Angle of Attack (AoA).
AoA is the primary instrument used by military pilots for safety, precision and control. Most recently the NTSB, FAA, Boeing and NASA (read the respective report links) recommend that all pilots train and learn AoA, just like the military.
When you are trained at Maui Flight Academy, you'll find yourself at a special place.
U.S. Navy and Air Force pilots are trained extensively on Angle of Attack from the first day of class, as it becomes the life blood for the rest of their flying career. Utilizing AoA from the very beginning, our students benefit from a proven methodology and safety that sets the foundation of the world's best pilots.
For busy professionals we offer a once-in-a-lifetime training experience:
You will be challenged, as high expectations are met.
What separates our training ?
Every lesson is recorded and analyzed post flight so the student can view any corrective actions or shortcomings that may be affecting progress.
A pre-check ride exam is performed at the end of the training. We no longer do solo, or solo cross country training. This program is designed for students doing their training elsewhere and come to Maui to hone their skills and culminates with the "mock checkride". This serves to not only finely tune any minor deficiencies but also serves to calm “check ride nerves”. So that your check ride becomes just another sharing of your highly prepared excellent performance.
Another important aspect of our training is that you will be flying the instructors personal Cirrus SR22 aircraft. Not only are you preparing for your license you are also learning how to become a Cirrus owner.
