Syllabus
Lesson Objective:
X-C flight operations and planning, as well as student familiarization with some of the unique challenges of flying to multiple airport located on various islands.
Demonstrate proficiency in flight planning, weather analysis, FSS weather briefing, weight and balance, fuel management, proper Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM) using the PAVE method. Additional emphasis on single engine overwater flight operations.
Syllabus:
1. Obtaining a Class C departure clearance to Leg 1 (PHLU).
2. Familiarization of the Hawaii VFR sectional with emphasis on Common Traffic Advisory Frequency communication and local reporting points.
3. Touch-and-go with crosswinds with ADM regarding runway conditions.
4. Leg 2 transition through the Class D airspace of Molokai into the Class E airspace of Lana'i with a touch and go. Emphasis on flight operations in uncontrolled airports.
5. Leg 3 to Hilo, will emphasize unique challenges of mountain flying operations, including transitions through restricted airspace, mountain wave avoidance, and proper high altitude leaning procedures. Understanding the unique operational consideration of flying in the vicinity of volcanic activity. A landing with a debrief and lunch.
6. Leg 4 Hilo to Hana, emphasis on using Angle of Attack to establish a stabilized approach to a runway not served by a VASI. Discussion on landing illusions due to rising terrain.
7. Leg 5 Hana to Kahului emphasizes challenges of high workload within a short flight.
Completion Standards:
Student will demonstrate all cross-country operation to within the current ACS standards.
