Get Current. Stay Sharp. Have Fun.The proximity of Lanai and Molokai, and the very quiet airways make for excellent time saving yet highly effective instrument proficiency training.

c) Instrument experience. Except as provided in paragraph (e) of this section, no person may act as pilot in command under IFR or in weather conditions less than the minimums prescribed for VFR, unless within the preceding 6 calendar months, that person has:
- For the purpose of obtaining instrument experience in an aircraft (other than a glider), performed and logged under actual or simulated instrument conditions, either in flight in the appropriate category of aircraft for the instrument privileges sought or in a flight simulator or flight training device that is representative of the aircraft category for the instrument privileges sought --
- At least six instrument approaches;
- Holding procedures; and
- Intercepting and tracking courses through the use of navigation systems.
Your day will begin with a briefing with your instrument instructor on the Avidyne avionics and approaches to be flown. We will also discuss go/no go decision making.
It is a good idea to get familiar with the instrument approaches for Molokai, Lanai and Maui.
A total of six approaches will be flown, with missed approaches, including a holding pattern and DME arc. One of the approaches can be flown using the autopilot.
We will fly:
2 approaches into Molokai (PHMK)
3 approaches into Lanai (PHNY)
Then take a lovely lunch break at the Four Seasons Lanai where we will debrief.
Then finally 1 approach into Kahului, Maui (PHOG)
We will also conduct an unusual attitude and recovery using manual control and autopilot.
Depending upon your experience with the Cirrus, we will customize this for you.
We will do a ground based review of how to brief an approach, checking weather using various sources and methods, notams, and properly filing flight plans. Also review on alternate planning. How to use and fly with an Angle of Attack indicator.
We will discuss special VFR, contact approaches, visual approaches, VFR -on-top, and a cruise clearance. We will include a system failure, partial panel, and some timed turns.
We also suggest that you subscribe and watch the various videos at AOPA Air Safety Institute including this one.
The total package is $1795 and includes ground transportation and lunch.
We look forward to a fun and challenging day of flying !
